Norah Head lighthouse
Norah Head is towards the northern end of the Central Coast region. The lighthouse still operates. When you look at the rocks below (extra) you can see why it is needed.
Norah Head lighthouse was built in 1903, using bricks made on site from local rock, sand and seashells, rather than the more common sandstone. That’s probably why it looks in such good condition: sandstone would have weathered more quickly.
In earlier days the lighthouse keepers and their families lived in the adjoining lighthouse houses. The essential qualifications for a lighthouse keeper were to be male, married and short. Short because space in the barrel (tower) and light chamber was limited. Nowadays the light is automated and the houses are holiday rentals.
