A place in time

Talk of the town

This concrete monstrosity is the first stage in the new development at Guildford station.  Apparently, it’s the first column for the lift shaft, and the development has already been nicknamed The Great Wall of Guildford for its huge proportions that will be visible for miles.  Lots of disgruntled Guildfordians are worried that the town will soon look more like Woking, with all the tower blocks that can be seen for miles around.  Certainly, you can see them from The Hog’s Back, with central London tower blocks on the horizon beyond Woking.

Guildford Station Revelopment

One does have to wonder if it’s a sensible idea for Guildford given the current financial climate - two large former department stores boarded up and empty, many individual shops closed down and even the retail shops that are clinging on often appear down at heel with low stock levels.

Anyway, I clocked up 3.32 miles (thanks Garmin) into the town centre and back again.  That’ll do me.

Thought for the day:

”The whole difference between construction and creation is exactly this: that a thing constructed can only be loved after it is constructed; but a thing created is loved before it exists.”

- Charles Dickens
