River Avon Railway Viaduct AT Linlithgow Bridge

This photo was taken from the hills just south of Linlithgow, looking north-west over the Forth valley.

In the foreground is the Linlithgow Bridge viaduct over the River Avon. I'm struggling to find much information about it, but I do know that it is still in heavy use as part of the main Glasgow to Edinburgh railway line, as well as carrying the Dunblane line to Edinburgh.

At the right hand of the image, about halfway up, a blue sign shows the location of the M9 motorway. And the same distance up the picture, but at the extreme left, a bus travels along the A803 towards Linlithgow.

Above the bus, the browny-grey area is the Avondale landfill site. Controversial amongst locals because of the operators' inability to control the stench that comes from the site, this is apparently one of Scotland's largest landfill sites. Nice.

Beyond that, some of the cooling towers and other plant structures of the Grangemouth refinery and its various chemical works. These all sit on the south side of the River Forth, which is only visible at the right-hand side of the image, between the thre chimneys.

Moving further away again, the northern side of the Forth Valley, a large flat area of flood plain. And in the very distance, the Wallace Monument and the Ochils.

A great viewpoint - even better on a nice clear, sunny day. I would really like to visit there on a crip winter's morning... but I'll maybe wait until I get a 4x4!
