" Smell the flowers"
Having visited Auschwitz, it was with misgivings and even dread we went to see the award-winning film “Zone of Interest” tonight.
I feared it would reawaken the horror of that day. While this is a brilliant and compelling film shown from the unusual viewpoint of a commandant and his family, portraying their very ordinary everyday domestic lives - “ smell the flowers “ urges the mother of her toddler while the walls of Auschwitz and the chimneys are visible in the background.
But it does not capture the absolute revulsion of the camp in reality as you walk from gas chambers to torture chambers, ending with the museum with its huge glass cases full of the belongings of exterminated Jews from spectacles, suitcases , watches and crutches to shoes and hair.
