Mothering Sunday

Celebrated since the Middle Ages in this country on the 4th Sunday of Lent but now also incorporated into the more commercial and Americanised Mother's Day and later in the year, Father's Day.  The celebration was originally the day of honouring the Mother Church where Christians visited the church in which they were baptised.  Later servants were given that Sunday off to go with their mothers and families to the service.  It is now a celebration of motherhood and churches all over the country give posies to the children to take to their mothers and other relatives.  Mothering Buns were/are made in Bristol for Mothering Sunday, these were a type of iced bun sprinkled with hundred and thousands and eaten at breakfast.  There are recipes on the internet.

Lunch with the family.  Later in the afternoon S and I drove to Sherborne to the Abbey to attend a Service of Thanksgiving to mark the RNLI's 200th Anniversary. It was packed with various dignitaries of the Institution giving readings and some history, the most moving was about the Solomon Browne and the sons of Mousehole which occurred in 1981, the Penlee Lifeboat Disaster.
