Swimming with the Turtles
Today we were up and out early ready to swim with the turtles on Akumal beach. It was about an hours drive away from where we are staying but apparently one of the spots you should see a turtle as Aku means turtle and mal means many in Mayen!
We were given a turtle guide who ran through the hand signals to do if you spot a turtle also scarily a hand signal for a sting ray! Thankfully didn’t have to use that one! We got our snorkel equipment and off we went. We walked out for the first bit but then we were told we could only be floating on the top never putting our feet down or kicking our legs in case you hit a turtle.
We were super lucky and saw 4 different Turtles one which was huge, they eat the sea grass on the bed of the sea but every 10 mins or so have to come up for air and we were very lucky that one came right up for air by us. We were told if they swim up by you to just float they don’t bite and are very gentle. If you panic it scared them and they swim off.
It was a great experience but just wished we had longer, even the fish we saw were amazing like finding Nemo!
After the snorkelling we had a couple of hours on Akumal beach so we find a beach bar order some food and drinks and sat watching the waves!
Tonight we were having a few drinks and Paul felt something skim past him looked up and a monkey was sat above us eating fruit chucking the bits down that he didn’t want!
