Wigmore
A late afternoon trip to nearby Wigmore Castle in Herefordshire. Begun in 1067 it became one of the largest and most important castles in the Welsh Marches. The castle was then partially destroyed during the English Civil War to prevent it being used by Royalist forces. It remained untouched for more than four hundred years and has now been conserved in a deliberately wild state as it supports various rare species including lesser horseshoe bats. My photograph shows the remains of the castle keep from the inner bailey.
