childhood haunts

This afternoon hubby and I headed down to hunt for fossils in an old childhood haunt of mine.

Before we moved to Skye permanently my parents had a small holiday cottage at a place called Rigg which is just after the Old Man of Storr on your way to Staffin. The house stood completely by itself with great views out towards Raasay and Rona. As kids we would spend hours exploring the hillside above the house or headed down to the shoreline below the cliffs to look for fossils and to fish off the rocks. On our way back up from the shore we would detour slightly to go and explore the old ruins of the settlement called Rigg which are on the croft land between the road and the cliff tops.

We were very lucky to have such an amazing place to explore and I am even luckier that I have managed to make Skye my permanent home.

The view is looking down past the cliffs to the small Island of Holm and the Cuilins beyond.

The place is very much off the normal tourist route but is well worth a visit just to see all the fossils, make sure you go when the tide is on the way out though!
