Creigiau eglwyseg
Today's the day ....................... to walk up to the castle
From everywhere in the little of town of Llangollen, you can see an isolated hill with the distinctive ruined walls of a castle on top of it. This was the Castell Dinas Bran built around 1260 by a native Welsh ruler - probably the local prince Gruffydd ap Madoc - who adapted the site of a prehistoric hill fort.
There's a well-signposted path up to the castle, which although quite steep at times, offers the chance to look out over the quite spectacular scenery of this part of the world. This is the limestone escarpment of the Creigiau eglwyseg.
One of the nice things about the walk was being able to hear the whoo whoo whistles of the steam train on the Llangollen Railway as it chugged up the Dee Valley on its 7-mile journey to Carrog ....................
