Walk on The Wild Side
“Ruins are the cathedrals of time.”
Marty Rubin
Cooked breakfast in Ross-on-Wye before BobsBlips takes me in search of C14th Penyard Castle on the hillside overlooking Ross. Fairly steep and sometimes muddy uphill walk through woodland; met a few walkers who confirmed we were on the right track, including a mad Springer who liberally decorated my jeans and jacket with muddy pawmarks! Easier going along the ridge but we still couldn’t see the castle and temporarily lost the GPS signal, first time Google Maps has come to my rescue. A solitary column of stone in a field gave us a clue, then we saw the ruins behind the stand of conifers – more a fortified manor house ruin than castle, but we’d found it! Three hours after we started we were back in Ross for coffee (and cake for me!). A lovely deli with some other goodies to take home too. Another successful day out in good company.
