Alice Holt Forest
I met up with Chris and the boys (Shelly at work) and we went to Alice Holt Forest for the afternoon. We were joined by Noah's bestie, Annabel (with her dad and sister). We walked and cycled (Noah) around the Gruffalo trail and had a coffee and ice cream in the café. Louis had a snooze in his pushchair. It was a lovely day.
I looked up the Forest before writing this and learn that it was a Royal Forest: "Alice Holt Forest is a royal forest in Hampshire, situated some 4 miles south of Farnham, Surrey. Once predominantly an ancient oak forest, it was particularly noted in the 18th and 19th centuries for the timber it supplied for the building of ships for the Royal Navy. It is now planted mainly with conifers" Apparently its is called Alice Holt becuase (leading on from the above) "One of the bishops was called Aelfsige and the name Alice Holt is a corruption of this. deer and game. timber production. use of the land by Commoners".
