Gladstone’s Land

One of the oldest buildings on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, Gladstone’s Land dates from the early 1600’s. It was first occupied by wealthy merchants, then by tradespeople and later become a boarding house. As late as 1912 it had no running water or sanitation and was about to be demolished when the National Trust acquired the building in 1934. It now shows 500 years of trading history over the different floors in the building and tells the stories of the people who lived there.
