End of an era
This evening was Jon’s final Scout meeting. I think he feels relief that there is one less thing to worry about. I know he will miss it, but he will be on call to fill the odd meeting with archery, bushcraft or just anything outdoors.
I went along tonight to make cards, which the scouts enjoyed. They made almost as much mess as I do. Jon took half the troop and did archery, then we swapped half way.
He received a nice thank you card signed by some of the scouts.
He started at Linton, in both Cubs and Scouts in 1995, then moved to Cromer Sea Scouts in 2015 where he set up an Explorer Scout troop, and also took over Cromer Scouts as leader before finally becoming the leader (Chief) at Sheringham sea scouts.
There really aren’t enough people willing to not only give up their time every week to entertain other people’s children, give them opportunities they wouldn’t ordinarily have, and take that huge responsibility that goes with it. Over the years of this unpaid job, you get very little thanks, have to wade through plenty of red tape and battle criticism from all sides. But lots of rewards too. The paperwork and meetings he will not miss. In 30 years, I think he has given more than is reasonable and in that time provided many hundreds of young people with the benefit of his skills, patience and knowledge. I’m sure most are richer for it.
So proud of my husband. He is one in a million.
