Past Tourist of Northallerton

Over the years Northallerton has welcomed many tourist who found the place appealing.

It is believed a signal post was set up here by the Romans so they could send postcards home.

From the 5th century the Anglo-Saxons found the area much to their liking.

By the late 9th century the Vikings loved visiting so much they introduced their own Danelaw.

It wasn't until after 1066 the Norman tourist started to outnumber both the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons taking the best camping spots.

In the 12th century 16000 Scots came down to visit but met 10000 English who had placed their towels on the best spots. It is said only 4000 Scots returned home...

Today tourist still pop into town, mainly on Wednesday which is one of the market days. They arrive by coach from places like Clitheroe and only stay for a few hours but enjoy discounted tea and cake in the large department store.

Today I was in Men's Shed where I made this historic tourist from the town's past.
