Unexpected acts of kindness
While chatting to Florentina selling The Big Issue outside a supermarket in Dunblane today I saw two acts of unexpected kindness.
A young woman approached and handed her a paper bag with a Danish pastry which she had just bought.
A few minutes later a smartly dressed middle aged woman walked up to her and handed over a half-eaten bar of chocolate “half for you and half for me’ she said smiling.
“Is this unusual “I ask.
“No, they are my friends. I am here three days a week.”
Florentina, 28 ,from Romania, has been in the country since 2004 .
Selling The Big Issue allows her to have her own business and independence.
But the transition to a cashless society poses problems because few of us carry cash these days.
While all vendors are supplied with their own card machines how many of us are prepared to stop and complete yet another digital transaction?
It was much easier to hand over a few coins.
