Wool Over His Eyes
We went for a walk in the forest at West Harling again this morning, this time taking some tracks which led us to the north-east corner and out by the meadows alongside the church. This fellow was enjoying the sunshine on one side of the track; the females were sheltering under a tree on the opposite side (see extra).
All Saint's Church (now redundant) was built around 1300 in what seems to be an isolated location backing onto what is now Thetford Forest - presumably the landscape looked much different, open Breckland, back then. At that stage of the walk it was beautifully sunny, though with a cold wind - before we returned to the car we'd been subjected to heavy showers, hail, and even some thunder and we wished we'd had a spreading conifer like the one the ewes were under for shelter instead of the skinny forest ones!
PS I think the sheep are Norfolk Horns, a rare breed which was developed originally to be able to thrive on the poor vegetation on the Breckland heathland.
