Dane John Rainbow
After a pleasantly lazy Saturday, I had to drop Gabriel into town so he could meet friends and go to a party. The sky was looking dramatic over Canterbury, and as we approached the city centre it was clear there would be some meteorological drama going down. Looking for a good spot to catch an interesting picture or two, Dane John Mound was a decent bet. This is an ancient Roman burial mound that was converted into a motte-and-bailey castle in the 11th century, but abandoned in 1123 when the larger stone keep – Canterbury Castle – was built a little to the north. The site was later developed into a civic park between 1790 and 1803. Reaching the top just in time, expecting storm clouds and sun rays, I was treated instead to a vivid double rainbow that appeared out of nowhere and only lasted for a couple of minutes before clouds obscured it again.
