The Moon Also Rises
Today's the day. . . . . . . . . . . to recommend
A few months ago, we were recommended by some good friends to watch the BBC television series, The Detectorists.
Somehow we had completely missed all three series of it when it was on between 2014 - 2022. We've now caught up on BBC iplayer - and I have to say that we've loved every minute of it. It is written and directed by Mackenzie Crook, who also stars alongside Toby Jones (of Mr Bates vs The Post Office). The series is set in the fictional small town of Danebury in North Essex and the plot revolves around the lives, loves and metal-detecting ambitions of Andy and Lance, members of the Danebury Metal Detecting Club. That probably doesn't sound very riveting watching?! - but it is a very funny and cleverly observed series that incidentally has a cracking sound-track by Johnny Flynn to go along with it.
Then, as is often the way of these things, the wonderful Alice Roberts was on Desert Island Discs yesterday on Radio 4 - and she chose as one of her records 'Coins for the Eyes' by Johnny Flynn with lyrics by Robert MacFarlane (Lost Words). It had been the theme tune for her 'Digging for Britain' Series.
The combination of Johnny Flynn and Robert MacFarlane was too tempting for Will and so he sent off for their recent collaborative CD. It arrived today and it's a gem. I would get it for the sleeve notes alone .....................!
