Packhorse Watering Trough
This is the Packhorse Watering Trough in Mankinholes, near Todmorden.
The main packhorse route between Lancashire and Yorkshire - over the Pennines - was nearby.
They used to have strings of horses - maybe six to ten horses long - and this water trough is just off this section of the route. The long trough facilitated watering a good number of horses at the same time.
The trough is Grade II listed and dates from the 18th Century. With the demise of the packhorse mode of transport, it used to be used for cooling churns of milk.
