Beware the blackthorn winter!
This is an old country saying which we still adhere to. The end of March is notorious for bad and unsettled weather and the older farmers accept we have to go through it to arrive at the more settled farming weather. Around us the hedges are covered with blackthorn blossom which looks like drifts of snow. These flowers are the flowers of the sloe from which sloe gin is made. And true to form we are in the middle of a blackthorn winter!
Extra: a blackthorn hedge
