Remnants

The cyclone that smashed southern Mozambique a few days ago has brought its remnants as far as Johannesburg. Cool winds are blasting around and threatening heavy downpours

I ventured back to the conference centre close to Johannesburg airport because I’d arranged to corner two key government counterparts before they departed back to Mozambique and Tanzania, respectively. It’s very rare to find us all in the same city at the same time and we have a shared project requiring consensus and momentum. In the end, only the Tanzanian counterpart showed up, a senior official in the Ministry responsible for environmental issues, but we had a wonderful discussion and she is always great to work with.

Afterwards I had to run sharpish to a nearby mall to take a call (and snaffle a croque madame) whilst my counterpart bobbed to the shops. Whilst in Jozi we are like starstruck teens from a simpler world, and the malls do draw us in…
