Building Fences
A mere two years after declaring that I needed to “urgently” replace the fence panels in our garden - and four months after I had to fit one temporary replacement panel to tide us over winter - today was finally the day when the new fence was installed.
To be fair, we were going to do this last year but the gas main replacement works on our estate meant that it was very difficult for delivery lorries to get to the house for most of summer and autumn of 2023. Then the weather over winter was too horrible to think about working outside.
But, finally, the stars have all aligned. A nice, warm, windless day meant conditions were ideal. The rotten old panels needed little persuasion to come out and the less rotten ones were lifted out of the posts without too much fuss. Fitting the new panels was not quite as straightforward though. One had to be cut down and one was right up against the tree, which resulted in a lot of jiggling before it slid home. But the one next to the house required half the upright boards to be carefully removed and then nailed back into place once the rest of the panel had been slotted into the space. This was because there wasn’t a big enough gap between the top of the post and the roof (a disadvantage of living in a bungalow) to enable the panel just to drop in. Time consuming rather than complicated and you can’t tell now that it’s in. The remaining two panels were a breeze by comparison and just dropped right in.
I’ve wedged all panels securely into place as well, so they should be able to withstand whatever storms come our way next winter.
These were not cheap panels, but they are solidly built and come with a 25 year guarantee. Which means they should see me out…
