The John O' Gaunt, Hungerford.

Thank you all so much for your lovely comments on yesterday's 100th blip. It was a really busy day- the kids came back from camp (without the use of a toothbrush, soap or flannel!) and I had to prepare for OFSTED today....

This pub is slightly unusual- it's not owned by a brewery or an individual, but by the Town and Manor of Hungerford. The Town & Manor of Hungerford probably became established in the 14th Century for the protection of the Rights of Common jealously exercised by the inhabitants of the Town.

It's a really old building that could date the property back to the reign of Henry III, early 13th century.

Originally the Inn was called "The Lancaster Arms" and the badge still features on the hanging sign over the footpath in Bridge Street. Then in 1814 for whatever reason the name "John of Gaunt" features with the publican's name Mr William Lye.
