Cannibalism? ...

Made a walk through the area after lunchtime. In one of the canals I saw a coot swimming with offspring. Not this coot I pictured on Friday June 14th (remarkably, the difference in picture quality between the compact and the full frame SLR camera, don't you think? ... ;)). It breeds still seven eggs.

This was an adult with her young not so far away. Suddenly she swam to the young and took the head in her beak. Somewhat confused I made a quick photo. But in fact there was nothing special going on. Moments later the young again swam freely and pecked occasionally a snack from the beak of the mother bird ... ;)
