Flight delay in Cairo- then scarey aborted landing
We had an evening flight from Sharm el Shaikh to Cairo. The bus took us out to the plane and we waited, and waited and waited, whilst we could see the pilot having a heated conversation with someone at the top of the stairs and then the bus turned around and headed back to the departure lounge! We then waited again in the bus whilst they decided what to do with us. Finally we were let back into the lounge. Our plane had a problem. There are flights every hour or so to Cairo but we knew that we had a tight turnaround for our onward flight back to Bahrain and after about 40 mins or so we knew we wouldn't make it. They did get us and a couple of others (one poor lady who was trying to get back to South Africa and had missed her connection too) put on the next flight. We got to Cairo and the airline was very helpful and said they were arranging a hotel for the night and then onward flight in the morning. We eventually got to the hotel after midnight but it was a very nice hotel and onward tickets with a different airline for the next day.
Everything was fine on the next flight to begin with, then over Saudi we could see a severe sand storm and vis was very poor and it was quite bumpy. As we approached Bahrain there was a lot of turbulence. We were coming into land over a place where "Sandtraveller" and a few others of us had been on a photo shoot. As we came in to land I thought "we're not going to make this!" it was much too fast and everyone was calling out and saying their prayers to Allah. At the last minute the plane pulled up hard and lockers opened and spilled and there were lots of women screaming. The poor guy next to us was crying. It was quite dramatic and not a little frightening. Made more so by the panicking passengers. My hubby and I being "true stiff upper lipped Brits" sat there quietly, but I did think 'should I text the kids??....no it'll just worry them, but I would like them to know they were the last thing I thought of!'
We then went into a twenty minute holding pattern, which was extremely bumpy and noisy. I remember thinking 'I'm alive now, but I'd really rather be alive on the ground!' We eventually approached again and this time we made it. A huge cheer from the whole plane and lots of thanks to Allah. Lots of passengers were chastising the pilot. I felt thank God he was such a GOOD pilot and managed to abort and then bring us in successfully. It was a freak thunderstorm and the windshear made it dangerous to land. We were the first to finally land when they re-opened the airport again. This is the second time this has happened to me and it is not pleasant. But thank goodness it all ended safely both times.
