Visit to Hoa Lo Prison

Interesting visit to the prison which was built by the French and later used by the Vietnamese for American POWs.  Conditions under the French were harsh with dysentery rife and the guillotine still being used to behead prisoners.  Two main escapes were mounted - through the sewers at night!

Asian convicts are obliged to work 9 hours per day. They are used to serve in the following jobs:
Drudgery outside the prison;
Work in rattan knitting workshops or other workshops in the city;
Drudgery inside the prison such as: maintenance the buildings, clean the garden, paths, sentry box, three - step staircase...
