Guest of the WPA…
That’s a Sondheim quote from the song ‘I’m Still Here’ from Follies . WPA is the Work’s Progress Administration, the institution set up in the US by FDR in the ‘30s to create work for creatives and labourers. So I have created a task for out-of-work son Rory who, as a cameraman, is reliant on the industry which is bumpy at the moment. He has got some camera work later this week and next but a lot of down time. So he did the much needed clear out of the garden shed. Which was layered with stuff including masses and masses of pots, very few of which are recyclable. Shed of broken dreams though, I found labels of plants that didn’t take and packets of seeds I never planted.
He worked hard through the day and I popped out occasionally to check on progress and make ‘kill or keep’ decisions. When he’d finished we went to the Dump, aka the Recycling Centre where we were able to recycle more than we thought and set off to drop him as close to the tube as possible, there being the all day rail strike. By my reckoning that was Heathrow T5’s Lizzie Line. Of course the Hindhead tunnel was shut, the traffic was horrendous and it was by now pouring with rain but Google maps got us through via the Farnham by-pass.
We got back to our relevant homes at the same time, confirmed by almost simultaneous texts. V had dinner ready and we watched another Ripley.
