Ferry terminal at Kororareka
(Back Blip posted a day late)
This day (Wednesday 10 April) was always going to be tiring. The main road north to Whangarei (SH1) suffered severe damage from the rain storm and then cyclone New Zealand experienced just over a year ago. Repairs to the road are under way, and most of the time the road over the Brynderwyns is closed to all but local traffic.
Partly to show our grand daughter some family history at Waipu, my plan was to take a detour through Waipu. Electronic signs on the side of the road informed us that due to "a vehicle incident" that root was closed. Other sources of advice made no comment, and we ended up being turned away, having to backtrack and then cross from almost East coast to almost West coast, and than half way back again to rejoin SH1 almost at Whangarei. We paused in Whangarei for a comfort stop and then a snack.
The trip thereafter was unremarkable, and it was still (just) daylight when we arrived. I had a short walk to ease muscles that had been in more or less one position fo a number of hours. There was enough light for a good picture of the ferry terminal at Kororareka (Russell)
