Hope for Madiba
President Nelson Mandela has been in the hospital for three weeks now and media interest has not died down. Significantly President Obama took his family for a tour of Robben Island today and went into Mandela's cell. I am sure it was quite emotional for him to be there and he did say many times that he hoped South Africans would continue to follow Madiba's example. Archbishop Desmond Tutu said that even lying in a hospital bed Madiba is able to bring people together. Today Queen Elizabeth offered a memorial service at Westminster.
People from all walks of life and all backgrounds have been visiting the hospital in Pretoria where he is being treated. They sing, leave messages, speak to the press or just look at the shrine that is slowly growing outside the gates.
It seems as if we are on the edge of a new age in our country. We all feel this strange energy but are not sure what it will turn into. We anxiously wait to hear news from Pretoria but nothing changes. Will he improve or will he just quietly let go?
There is no doubt that this man has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. Young and old know his name, but I think it is only when he is gone that the full impact of his legacy will be revealed.
