WidWed170424 :: Church or Chapel

The church of the Holy Cross in Swainby was built in 1877 and part of the Whorlton-Swainby parish. Swainby isn't mentioned in history until 1428 and is thought to have been settled by the 10 surviving inhabitants of Whorlton after the Black Death. Whorlton is just up the hill from Swainby where the remains of a Norman castle and the older parish church can be found.

Swainby is under the shadow of the western edge of the North York Moors. The high street is split along its length by the Crook Beck, a stream that starts up on the Moors. My Blip shows one of the two road bridges in this part of the village with Holy Cross hiding behind the trees.

This image has been edited using my phone and Snapseed. I doubt if I could get the same effect again...
