Real - or not?

Spotted this colourful couple this afternoon.  My question is - are the 'hairstyles' real or 'accessories' that can be removed?  I don't know, but have always wondered ...... :-)
(Apologies for image quality, it's a reflection in my door mirror taken with my phone camera - it doesn't stand much magnification .....).
