Oitir / becomes / Otter
Otter Ferry on the shore of Loch Fyne has a nice pub/ restaurant called The Oystercatcher where Cathleen and I had lunch today.
The weather was great - the first warm day of the year - but the place always reminds me of the fact that Scotland has several languages, and they don't always fit together as they should.
There must be some otters here but that is not why the place carries their name. There is, however, and the blip shows it very clearly, an "oitir" - a spit of sand, or a sandbank - and that is the feature remarked on in its older Gaelic name.
This is an obvious example of the danger of anglicising place names without any real knowledge of what they signify. There are of course many examples in Scotland, but many others from many different languages , I am sure, world wide too.
Anyway, whatever it is called it is a fine place to be on a day like this, and lunch was very good too as my extras indicate.
