I purchased a 'Rocket Blower' from Jessops. That's right a Rocket Blower! At £7-50 its not all that cheap but if it works its a lot cheaper that some of the other cleaning solutions.

I locked up the mirror and gave it a try. Success! The horrible blob has been removed. My test shots - shooting a plain white A4 sheet - indicate some other very minor marks so I will have another couple of attempts to see if I can get it pristine.
