Carving Out Your Opportunities
We only took a quick spin out to West Malling today for a bit of food shopping and on the way back home swung past the village of Teston. Again it's somewhere we've passed through many times and we cross it's medieval bridge on the way to The Horseshoes every Sunday for our customary pint.
On this occasion we felt we should rectify our Teston based negligence so we parked the car down a side street and got out for a stroll. It was a lovely day but bitingly cold due to a strong northerly wind which we certainly felt as we headed towards the gloriously atmospheric village green which is framed by a plethora of listed houses and cottages and the parish church of St Peter's and St Paul's.
Quite a few of my recent blips seem to have featured churches or churchyards but I just find them such places of peaceful contemplation and quiet beauty. The churchyard of St Peter's and St Paul's is no exception but I couldn't seem to capture an image of it that I was happy with.
However, as we walked around the perimeter I was stopped in my tracks as I thought I had seen the distinct outline of an owl perched on the roof of an outbuilding just on the other side of the churchyard wall. When I looked further along the roofline I could see that incredibly there were two - one at each end of the building. What were the chances! Then on closer inspection I realised they were both standing stock still with the strong wind failing to ruffle even a single feather and after using my zoom lens to focus in on them I very quickly became aware that they were wooden carvings and not the real thing. At first I must admit I was quite disappointed, and felt a tad foolish, but then I thought I still needed to take my opportunity to get an image and that I should really be appreciating the skill deployed in creating such realistic carvings - or at least that's my excuse for not spotting my mistake in the first place! :-)
