St Paul
A big day out and too tired blip last night!
An American scholar contacted me and asked me if I would take her on a holy well day, all expenses paid etc. I said yes and yesterday we went out on a recce to check all wells were accessible - Finola was one of the intrepid explorers. We rendezvoused in Bantry and headed on to Kenmare, partaking of the customary large coffees and pastries in the French patisserie. Five wells were on the agenda, two easy to find, three somewhat challenging, and each one very different. The main is St Paul's Well in an incredibly bosky and remote setting accompanied nearby by a dilapidated St Peter's Well. There were deer prints everywhere, the air full of birdsong and wildflowers in abundance.
On to All Saints Well in an even more remote setting. There is a story attached. St Finbarr was trekking across the mountains on his way back to Gougane Barra and had a rest here at Loo Bridge, sitting down on the rocks by the well. He was half way back to Gougane when he realised he'd forgotten his specs. A relay of handy saints passed his glasses from the well along the mountain to the forgetful saint. So holy were his specs they left their imprint on the rock! We pondered on this and thought he might have left other saintly imprints - discuss!
On to Ballyvourney where a most welcome bowl of soup and chips were enjoyed as a late lunch before venturing across field and through woods to see St Abban.
I hope the American scholar will be bringing her wellies.
A lovely day but Robert sorely missed.
