Between these two buildings is a glimpse of just some of the Imperial Palace grounds, which have been preserved.  This still has the residence of the (now ceremonial) emperor and empress.  The grounds are extensive with many buildings on them.  I think the actual palace is surrounded by trees so to get a good view you have to go there on foot.
