I suppose a basic psychological exercise you can perform when visiting a stranger's house for the first time is to check what sort of books they've been reading. You know, a kind of ready-reckoner to see what makes them tick.

A safe bet for a well-rounded individual would be a soupcon of Dan Brown, a smattering of Michael Crichton and and embarrassment of Jodi Picoult.
