Leaving and arriving
It's been a frustrating day. I turned right from the cathedral and found that the castle is being repaired so the road past it is blocked off. I couldn't see the castle properly and I couldn't get to the Rock of Ceres at all.
Instead I planned my escape and walked from my room to tomorrow morning's bus stop. I was extremely glad I did as an '11-minute' Google walk was down steep worn-slippery roads and back up more steps than I could be bothered to count. Without baggage it took me 20 minutes holding on to handrails where there were any; with baggage would be a lot longer and not very safe. I had what I thought was a smart idea and looked at Google's recommended cycle route. Nope - even that involves carrying the bike down then back up a lot of steps.
But then...
I realised that I should have gone to La Villa romana del Casale today as it's going to be much harder to get to from anywhere else on my route. Very bad planning, remedied (I hope) by an evening of cancelling, rebooking, juggling, contemplating rearranging accommodation, checking what transport won't work on the public holiday on 1 May (which I did already know about), organising storing my luggage during the day tomorrow, writing off some tickets, getting a tiny refund for one, buying replacements, negotiating a late check-in where I'm staying tomorrow night. That's assuming I can get there - I can't buy tickets even though the Trenitalia website says the train replacement service exists...
Maybe I'm due another night on a station bench after all these years.
Meanwhile everyone else was doing their laundry.
