Brassica nigra or Black mustard

is an invasive species in our area. It produces chemicals that prevent other plants from growing around them. Their seeds are too small for seed eating animals, so they are spreading. Black mustard is said to have been introduced to California by the missionaries. It spread like a carpet between all the missions along the coast.
