Seen on Mission Street
Shot from a moving vehicle, so not the best composition, but I think the general idea is clear. (No, I was not driving.) First I was flabbergasted to see the gas prices as we were waiting at the red light. Then my attention was grabbed by the pink posters; we know gas costs more here, but why are they calling our attention to it at the pump? There is a QR code obscured by the planter that apparently takes you to a website that blames California emission standards and taxes for high prices—nearly two dollars more per gallon statewide than the national average of $3.64. (The highest figure on the billboard here, however, is $6.19 for Supreme, if you pay with a credit card.)
I’m not gonna take on the oil industry or the state of California here. I just think it’s an odd campaign, especially since the QR code is hidden. And what is it about these codes? There is a huge one in front of the pot shop that is trying to open just down the street from the gas station; there is no business name or anything to say what is to be sold there, just a giant QR code on a pole. Are you supposed to scan it as you drive by? I am old enough to have never used my cell phone while driving, but I’m probably in the minority on that one. And I often have trouble getting the card reader app to work properly. Sometimes the future looks like it’s just gonna be too hard.
