Marag
Seriously this dog is going to give me a heart attack one fine day.
A week yesterday I was out walking the two dogs by the loch when I saw a couple of dogs approaching. As Pene is now a bit deaf and tends to bark at other dogs I stopped to put her lead on then I walked towards the two dogs. I looked around and there was no sign of Marag. I asked the lady with the dogs did she see her and she said just for a second but lost sight of her. We both looked around but no Marag. One of her dogs a black lab was now standing in the loch barking and I looked longer at where she was and thought I saw something in front of her. I jumped in and felt around and sure enough there was Marag who by now had swallowed a substantial lot of water.
A dry 30 kilo dog was hard enough to try to get out onto the steep bank but a drowning wet one was almost nigh on impossible. I managed to get her head above water and held her for a bit while I considered my options. The lady and her husband were not able to help as they were both too infirm. Anyhow eventually I managed to haul Marag out. by this time she was almost non responsive. I knew what had happened she had taken an epileptic fit and had tipped into the loch and was taking water into her lungs.
After what seemed like an eternity she came round and slowly slowly we got to the car and I took her straight to the vet.
The vet gave her a huge doze of antibiotic as she was worried about pneumonia and severe lung damage.
That night I had to call the emergency vet out and she gave her some more stuff but it tipped her into another fit which took almost an hour to come out of.
I managed to get her back to the vets the next day and they put her on a cocktail of heavy duty antibiotics and she came back home and honestly looked like she was on her way out.
Gradually each day her breathing improved and today she is getting back to being more bouncy and her breathing and cough have improved. She's young and strong. No more walking her near water. the vet suggested she wear a harness as it would help if she took another outdoor fit and would be easier to handle. I thought about a tracker but the water would have damaged one. She's fine off the lead but no more walking near water or she will have to be on a long lead.
Yesterday we got word one of our neighbours back home died suddenly and last night our son told us the wee fellow got his fingers jammed in a door and had to be sedated a little but thankfully he's fine now.
Im assuming as everything tends to come in threes that my bad luck has now passed over! And I will heave a sigh of relief when this damn week is over.
