Exam
Liberated from marking, I started programming again today: just easy changes to fix some user issues as I get myself back into the groove. Not that I'll be able to focus on HiGHS for the rest of my stay here, as I'll have to mark my exam before I return. The students took it this afternoon, and in the evening I had a message from a one, asking whether there was an error in one of the questions. He was right, but it's very minor, and I'll mark according to either interpretation of the question. It's amazing how a cut-and-paste error isn't spotted by either the checker or the external examiner, but it won't be the last time!
At the end of the afternoon, I went out to stretch my legs, walking to the far side of the fjord to buy beer from the alcohol shop. I've settled on stout as the quality beer here, buying a half-dozen each of Oy's Kusturin, and the Icelandic dark stout. The "big" Faroese brewer (Føroya Bjór) also makes soft drinks for the islands, and it says a lot that their cola is better quality than their beer.
Although it's good to be able to see across the fjord again - it's Klakkur in the photo - it was far from being a fine evening, but the rowing club had three boats out. I guess that it was pleasantly calm. Their partially turf-roofed boathouse is magnificent, but that's to be expected here.
I've added the word "pant" to my very limited Faroese vocabulary. It means "deposit", and also know where to go to get 25p back on every can and bottle that's under the sink. There are a couple of machines at the alcohol shop where you can exchange bottles and cans for money. I wouldn't discount the possibility that by swiping your card it's credited to your bank account, rather than being returned as cash.
Outside the Tourist Office I spotted a poster for a "Heiðurskonsert fyri Straight Ahead", on 17 May in Klaksvík. Since it seems to be a rock band celebrating 50 years, it might be worth attending. I'll enquire about tickets tomorrow.
After the exciting conclusion of "Hinterland", I'm now three episodes into the weird but excellent "Baby Reindeer"
