Bristol day 5: Stanton Drew & Stoney Littleton

A bit knackered after our massive day yesterday and with a cold wind, we enjoyed a late breakfast and then went to Stanton Drew- the second largest stone circle in the country after Avebury, and not much visited. In fact there are three stone circles, the stones in the main one are seriously colossal. There are also avenues and other odd things including what had once been concentric circles of huge wooden posts within the stone circle. It was looking beautiful, the fields full of dandelions and lady's smock. We lunched at the friendly pub and went down to admire the ridiculously scenic old toll house - note the hares on the top.
Then we went on to Stoney Littleton- sorry Will, minute cow parsley strewn lanes but it was worth it. This is a long barrow in a commanding position up on a hill, noted for a large ammonite placed in the entrance. The information panel mused could the ammonite have been placed deliberately. Of course it feckin had!! We clambered in - the roof incredibly low, little chambers off to each side. An apple had been left as an offering. It was surprisingly calm and warm - very peaceful, but maybe that’s how a burial place should be.

On returning home we ate beans on toast and watched A Day in a Field very fitting after all our adventures - so beautifully shot.
