Jonno’s Field
Our day in Whitby ends with a visit to Jonno’s Field on the outskirts of Scarborough where we encounter a scene reminiscent of our travels to Easter Island six years ago. We loved the Moai statues of Rapa Nui, and these wooden carvings, though much smaller, bring back memories of their majesty and mystery.
Apparently, they were carved by local artist David Shepherd in 2015 and are a symbol of the connection between Scarborough and Easter Island. ‘Scarborough is a port city that has a long history of trade with the Pacific Islands. In the 18th century, Scarborough was a popular destination for sailors who were returning from voyages to the Pacific. Many of these sailors brought back souvenirs from their travels, including Moai statues.’
The view towards Scarborough castle from their hillside location is spectacular. It may not be Easter Island, but it has a magic all of its own.
I’ve added a shot of a Rapa Nui sunrise in extras - I just had to go back to the island!
I’m actually posting on the day for once - and I’ve also posted yesterday’s entry. Whether I’ll keep this up, I don’t know. Everything takes me so long to do, I’m afraid - hence I’ve yet to look at any journals tonight.
