Burrawang …

….is the indigenous name for Macrozamia communis, a Cycad from eastern Australia, photographed here in the Botanic Gardens in Canberra. The fruit is toxic to humans, and many early colonial explorers recorded severe illness after eating it. First Nations people understood this and had discovered how to treat the fruit to remove the toxin. The individual fruits are about 1 inch in diameter and the whole fruiting body about 12 inches across.
