I missed the most spectacular colours of the aurora last night but did hear the “aurora noise” about which little is written, although I found some information.  I was watching from the bedroom window and it sounded as if it was raining with little crackling sounds and fleeting pulses of light.  When I stood outside for several minutes in the hope that the intense colours would return, the sound continued.  I wonder if anyone else noticed the sound that apparently is rare and can be heard only on windless nights during maximum aurora activity.
About five hours later this was the view shortly before sunrise.
