River Easkey
The weather has turned back to overcast today. It is our day to pack as tomorrow we head back to Dublin Airport to fly home, so we decided not to go too far and drove along the coast to the village of Easkey.
Easkey is a surfer's paradise and surfers come from all over the World to enjoy the big waves. The coast road put us in mind of Ray's Rest in New Zealand with all the camper vans parked up along it. Despite the gloomier weather, there were two groups of surfers out on the sea.
Easkey was asleep when we arrived but the two churches were calling local folks to Mass so we guessed it might wake up after the services. With this in mind we took the short coastal walk down by the pretty river. This was a haven for nature with a heron fishing from the rocks across from us and several different birds swooping low over the water catching insects. Birds of the day are willow warblers, wrens and linnets.
After watching the surfers awhile, we retraced our steps to the village and Easkey had indeed awoken. The Pudding Bowl Grocery was open so we bought cuppas and cake (and two small tarts for lunch) and took them down to the riverbank to enjoy them, with a jackdaw keeping an eye out for crumbs.
Replenished, we called in to Rosie's Pottery as I wanted to have a look for a birthday present. Rosie's key piece is a bird in flight, a sort of modern day equivalent to the mallards in flight that I certainly remember my Mum having on our wall. I purchased a flight for me and one for friend Helen, little souvenirs from our visit to Ireland. I was tempted by a very beautiful bowl with an umbellifer design but I really have nowhere to put it, so reluctantly returned it to its shelf.
Easkey done we drove back to the cottage and now we have to pack.
