ELECTRATHON / UHM COMPETITION

There's a competition at Road America, America's National Park of Speed, for high school technology education students.  An Electrathon for strictly electric automobiles and an Ultra High Milage (UHM) competition for internal combustion automobiles, all of which are constructed by the students, mostly males but there are several female team members.

All constructed vehicles must pass strict safety protocols; so must the drivers. There's several obstacle courses that must be negotiated and finally laps around the track.  The electric vehicles made laps around the 4-mile track until the battery was dead.  The winning team made the most laps on a single charge...which was equal for all vehicles.  In the UHM group, they were supplied with a measured amount of fuel and they made two laps of the 4-mile track.  The fuel container was measured to see how much fuel was left and a mathematical algorithm determined mpg.  Winners are typically between 300-400mpg.  One year there was a team that achieved +700mpg on one lap but that was likely an anomaly as their other laps were typically between 300-400mpg.  Might have been a glitch somewhere....DUH!  Basically, these machines can cruise all day on a thimble full of fuel.

All the work was done by teams of students but advisors were allowed to answer questions and make suggestions.  Most teams are from Wisconsin but we draw entries from many surrounding states, especially Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota.
