An old abandoned saddle
The local forest Dryads were out boozing in the village hotel last night. One of them, doubtless the worse for drink, has left her saddle behind in the hotel carpark.
In reality this is the fruiting body of a very large polypore fungus known as the Dryad's saddle fungus Polyporus squamosus.
The generic name Polyporus means 'many pores' whilst the specific epithet squamosus means 'scaly'. A Dryad is a tree nymph or tree spirit in Greek mythology. You can see one here.
