Culross : Preston Island
Culross ( pronounced "cooriss") is a small Royal Burgh on the shores of the Forth . Many of the properties are in the care of the National Trust , including the Palace.
An interesting walk east of the town is the circuit of Preston Island following the perimeter fence of the Ash Lagoons storing the ash from the nearby Longannet Power Station. The views up,down and across the river take in the huge expanse of the Grangemouth oil refinery ( not the most attractive landscape) , Bo'ness, and a distant sighting of the Forth Bridges ( 2 at the moment!).
A feature of the walk are the remains of these buildings where salt was panned in the early 19th century . Some information boards provide useful background about what was at that time an important industry. The site is fenced off but the buildings have clearly been as well looked after as possible
